Plot

In a gritty, bustling city hospital, high school dropout Lora Hart is unexpectedly hoisted from obscurity after crossing paths with the distinguished Dr. Arthur Bell, who helps her secure entry into a nursing school. Amidst the chaos and clamor of the medical world, she cultivates an unlikely friendship with a bootlegger nursing a bullet wound and bonds with her quick-witted co-worker, Bea Maloney. Together, they navigate the rigors of their training, emerging as competent nurses ready to face the world. But their first assignment plunges them into a shadowy world of suspicion and uncertainty. Tasked with caring for two seemingly ailing girls within the deceptive elegance of a Fifth Avenue apartment, they discover a disturbing reality beneath the veneer of respectability. Neglected by a dipsomaniac mother, an indifferent housekeeper, and terrorized by a brutish chauffeur, the girls' plight raises disquieting questions. As Lora peels back the layers of deception, she suspects a sinister plot of intentional starvation. But her attempts to expose the horrific truth are met with apathy and resistance, not only from the girls' ominous doctor but also from her once-benevolent mentor, Dr. Bell. Faced with the agonizing decision to resign or stay, Lora must navigate the murky waters of deceit and indifference, armed with nothing but her courage and determination to save her vulnerable charges from an insidious fate.
