Plot

Once the shining star of the late 80s on the British television landscape, Richard Thorncroft, now exists as a fading memory. He was revered for his captivating portrayal of Mindhorn, a charismatic detective in an Isle of Man show, wielding a robotic eye that could literally 'see the truth.' Thorncroft's ego, however, became his downfall. His off-screen arrogance led to an insulting tirade against his Isle of Man homeland and his fellow cast members on a popular chat show. Among the insulted was his on-screen and real-life sweetheart, Patricia Deville, his devoted stuntman, and the overlooked co-star, Peter Easterman. Thorncroft, in a misguided bid for greater fame, left for Hollywood, only to find himself, a quarter of a century later, a balding has-been in a North London flat, ousted from an orthopaedic sock advert by John Nettles. Adding insult to injury, he watches Easterman bask in the glory of a successful spin-off show, far outshining Mindhorn's success. However, fate has a curious way of intervening. A chance to rekindle his faded stardom falls into his lap when a delusional criminal, "The Kestrel," begins to wreak havoc on the Isle of Man. This disturbed criminal's unhealthy obsession with the show leads him to demand to communicate solely with Mindhorn. Seizing this opportunity, Richard reprises his role, dons his iconic turtleneck and robotic eye, and dives headfirst into his old persona, much to the irritation of the police. As he navigates this unusual situation, he attempts to rekindle his romance with Patricia, tries to negotiate a DVD deal with Easterman, all the while dealing with the embarrassing remnants of his 80s persona – political incorrectness, a laughable solo musical single, a useless cyborg eyepatch, and an arsenal of cheesy one-liners. The once-forgotten Mindhorn is back, ready to deliver a storm of justice, because for him, it's always been 'truth time.'
