Plot
Plunged into the grimy underbelly of Hollywood, Max Barber (Robert De Niro) and his partner, Walter (Zach Braff), are just a couple of down-on-their-luck B-Movie producers. Their lives are thrown into a frenzy of danger when they cross paths with the formidable mob boss, Reggie Fontaine (Morgan Freeman). To save their own skins, they are forced to hand over their only great script to their former protégé turned A-list producer, James Moore (Emile Hirsch).
But when Moore's star actor tragically dies during a stunt, cashing in on a hefty insurance policy, it sparks a devilishly ingenious idea in Barber. Teaming up with Walter, they dust off a dreadful script titled 'The Oldest Gun In The West' and rope in Duke Montana (Tommy Lee Jones), a washed-up cowboy actor known for his fearless stunts. They bank on Montana's faded glory and fragile state, hoping an on-set 'accident' will secure them a similar insurance windfall.
However, the plan takes an unexpected turn when the faded star finds new vigor in front of the camera, proving more resilient than anyone anticipated. As Montana miraculously survives increasingly treacherous stunts, Barber's scheme spirals out of control, and he finds himself unintentionally crafting the best movie of his career.
