Plot

In the year 1992, Peru found itself clawing its way out of one of the darkest chapters in its republican era (1821 onwards). The nation was still reeling from the devastation of a catastrophic economic crisis and over a decade of bloodshed and turmoil, courtesy of the Sendero Luminoso guerrilla warfare. The scars etched deep into the psyche of the Peruvian population were still fresh and painful. Adding to the chaos, Alberto Fujimori had recently dissolved the government bodies, seizing exceptional powers to impose stern economic policies. Amidst this tumultuous backdrop, acclaimed filmmaker Heddy Honigmann unfurls the captivating narrative of 'Metal and Melancholy'. The film offers an intimate glimpse into the lives of 14 authentic taxi drivers navigating the gritty streets of Lima. These everyday heroes embody the resilience and resourcefulness that were the cornerstones of survival during these turbulent times. Their stories are not just tales of survival, but a testament to the indomitable human spirit that seeks to thrive amidst adversity, aspiring to a brighter future for themselves and their loved ones. Each driver's journey becomes a microcosmic reflection of the nation's struggle, shedding light on the determination and grit of ordinary people in extraordinary times. This film is a compelling chronicle of perseverance, echoing the heartbeat of a nation striving to rise from the ashes of its troubled past.
