Pay It Forward (2000)

When high school student Trevor McKinney receives a serious new challenge from social studies teacher Mr. Simonet, he sees it as a chance to distract him from his everyday life and to maybe channel his own pain into helping others. Trevor's father is absent, but he still has memories of his abusive behavior; and Trevor's mom is continuing the cycle of trauma thanks to her alcoholism. Trevor's answer to the complex question of how you can make the world a better place is deceptively simple — to pay forward favors you haven't received in advance.
