Plot

In the vibrant whirlwind of the early 1960s, the flamboyantly unpredictable Mrs. Flax, captivatingly embodied by Cher, finds herself starting over yet again on the East Coast after yet another romantic disappointment. As a fiery, seductive single mother, she unintentionally becomes a constant source of mortification for her adolescent daughter, Charlotte, who is grappling with her own turbulent journey into adulthood. Charlotte, a 15-year-old on the cusp of maturity, is caught in an emotional maelstrom of adolescent angst, religious aspirations, and the tumultuous waves of a sexual awakening. This poignant period of her life is made all the more confounding by her mother's whimsical lifestyle and her own lofty dreams of becoming a nun. However, Charlotte's life takes an unexpected turn when she finds herself falling for a gentle, unassuming church employee, evoking a myriad of mixed emotions from her mother and herself. Set against the backdrop of the Kennedy Assassination, Mermaids paints a vibrant tableau of a mother and daughter navigating the choppy waters of love, identity, and the seismic shifts of an era on the brink of significant change. Adapted from Patty Dann's novel, this film weaves together the threads of familial bonds, fervent aspirations, and the complexities of coming-of-age amidst a world in flux.
