Empire of the Sun (1987)

Jamie is a British schoolboy living in Shanghai with his parents when Japan invades China in World War II. He is separated from his family and lives on the streets for a while until he is taken to an internment camp. There, he manages to survive and even thrive, making friends with and trading with the other prisoners. He also befriends a young Japanese pilot. However, he still longs to find his parents and be reunited with them again.
