Plot

Set against the backdrop of Mughal-ruled India, "Meera" (1979) weaves a complex tapestry of love, sacrifice, and spirituality amidst political upheaval. The powerful Rajput clans, led by prominent figures Virendev Rathod and Rana Vikramjit Singh Sesodia, unite to overthrow Emperor Akbar. As an act of alliance, Vikramjit plans to wed his brother Rana Bhojraj to Krishna Rathod. However, unbeknownst to all, Krishna's hand has already been promised to another by Jaimal, Virendev's son. In a heartbreaking twist, Krishna is asked to make the ultimate sacrifice for the Rajput cause and take her own life, which she does. In the wake of Krishna's tragic demise, the Rajputs propose an alternative union: Rana Bhojraj and Meera Rathod. Their grand wedding unfolds amidst plans of uniting the Rajputs against Emperor Akbar. As Meera adjusts to her new life, a startling revelation emerges - Meera is deeply in love, but not with her husband. Her heart and soul belong to someone else, Lord Krishna. This discovery sends shockwaves through the region, and the Head Priest is tasked with a grave decision regarding Meera's fate. "Meera" is not merely a historical account of the Mughal era, but a deeply moving portrayal of a woman's struggle for independence, dignity, and spiritual fulfillment in a society that seeks to confine her to household chores. As Meera, the saint-poet chooses to renounce her princely comforts in pursuit of her divine love for Lord Krishna, the film illuminates her defiance against societal norms, and her unflinching devotion to her spiritual path. Will she be forced to accept Bhojraj as her husband and renounce her love for Lord Krishna, or will she choose to consume a lethal poison that promises an instant, but defiant death? "Meera" invites you to explore this riveting journey of love, sacrifice, and spiritual awakening.
