In the summer of his sixteenth year, Les Anderson finds himself caught in the throes of adolescent longing, his heart aflutter for the enchanting Mercedes Lane. Despite her current entanglement with the suave, car-owning Paolo, Les dreams of sweeping her off her feet. Twin sister Natalie diligently prepares for the imminent driving test, but Les, distracted by teenage fantasies, fails to give it the attention it demands, resulting in an unfortunate failure he lacks the courage to disclose to his expectant parents and loyal comrades, Dean and Charles. When a lovers' quarrel leaves Mercedes seeking a way to make Paolo envious, she turns to Les, igniting his hopes for a romantic escapade.
