Plot

Born into affluence, Richter Boudreau (Eric Stoltz) finds himself navigating a life of disappointment and disarray in the heart of Tulsa, Oklahoma. Despite his privileged background and a cushy job as a film critic at a local newspaper, procured through the influence of his influential mother Cynthia (Mary Tyler Moore), Richter is a ship adrift on the sea of life. He faces the looming specter of unemployment due to missed deadlines, a crumbling farmhouse for a home, and a mounting debt that has already claimed his electricity. Adding to Richter's woes is his tangled web of personal relationships. He is haunted by the remnants of his love for Vicky (Deborah Kara Unger), a disowned socialite now married to the ruthless drug dealer, Ronnie Stover (James Spader). As if this isn't enough, his current girlfriend Trudy (Cameron Diaz) ends their relationship, leaving him heartbroken. Unbeknownst to Richter, an unanticipated romantic encounter awaits him with Cherry (Joanna Going), a Chicago-based exotic dancer who has her own ties to Ronnie. As Richter struggles with his spiraling life, Ronnie concocts a dangerous blackmail scheme targeting Bedford Shaw (Marco Perella), a high-profile businessman's son. This scheme, ignited by Cherry's revealing of a dark secret involving Shaw, seeks to exploit Richter's newspaper connections, dragging him further into a whirlpool of intrigue and danger. With his life crumbling around him and a blackmail plot thrust upon him, Richter finds himself in a perilous situation when his ex-lover's brother, Keith (Michael Rooker), discovers Richter's ongoing tryst with Vicky. In the midst of this chaos and complexity, Richter may discover that his only glimmer of hope lies in the even greater ineptitude of those around him. "Keys to Tulsa" is a captivating journey through a life teetering on the precipice of disaster, where love, betrayal, and desperation collide against the vibrant backdrop of Tulsa, Oklahoma.
