Plot

Gerd Wiesler is a high-ranking officer in the Stasi, which was secret police force in East Germany. The Stasi assigns Weisler to eavesdrop on the life of playwright Georg Dreyman. Dreyman is an extremely popular, successful playwright, and the government is worried he might defect to the West. Wiesler finds himself drawn to the daily dramas of the playwright's life and starts to care deeply about the man's fate. As the government's suspicions grow, Wiesler uses his knowledge to protect Dreyman from his fellow spies. When events reach their climax, Wiesler is faced with a decision that could affect all their lives.
