Plot

Set against the bustling backdrop of Phoenix, Arizona, the long-running series "Alice" zeroes in on the life of Alice Hyatt, a widowed aspiring singer with a teenage son, Tommy. After the untimely death of her truck-driver husband, Alice sets her sights on Hollywood, only for her dreams to be temporarily parked in Phoenix when her car breaks down. With little money to her name, Alice finds herself in the midst of a greasy-spoon diner owned by Mel Sharples, a gruff and chauvinistic fry cook with a penchant for underpaying his staff. Resilient, Alice dons the apron of a waitress at Mel's Diner, serving up steaming plates of food and her own brand of charm, while nursing her dreams of the spotlight. The diner's vibrant staff includes the fiery redhead, Florence, known as Flo, whose appetite for men is as robust as the customers' for Mel's cooking, and Vera Louise Gorman, a sweetly naive woman whose ditziness is as endearing as it is frustrating. As the years roll on, the staff roster changes from the Southern belle Belle, another singing hopeful, to the sharp-tongued former truck driver, Jolene. Mel's Diner, described as a melting pot of everyday blue-collar folk and the occasional Hollywood celebrity passing through, becomes the stage for the unfolding drama, comedy, and heartwarming tales of Alice and her eclectic band of co-workers. From the regular customers like the quirky truckers Henry and Earl, to Vera's endearing romance and eventual marriage to the lovable Elliot, "Alice" serves up a hearty platter of life's daily specials with a side of dreams and aspirations.
