Plot

In the grey-hued world of working-class Yorkshire, a future of dim prospects and crushing expectations looms over 15-year-old Billy Casper. His life, marred by neglect, sees him abandoned by his father and overlooked by his weary mother. Plagued by the constant torment from his brutish older brother, Jud, a coal miner, and the harsh ridicule of school bullies, Billy strives to navigate through the rough waters of his adolescent life. Even his teachers, particularly the domineering physical education instructor, Mr. Sugden, add to his trials. Yet within this hard-knocked existence, Billy still clings to his renegade spirit, dabbling in petty crimes when necessary, albeit asserting to have forsaken his delinquent ways. His unfocused mind, easily adrift, especially in the face of authority, may pose further obstacles as he confronts his forthcoming life beyond school. A glimmer of hope emerges in the unlikeliest of places when Billy stumbles upon a kestrel's nest in a nearby farmer's field, sparking a newfound enthusiasm within the young lad. Despite his lack of knowledge, he embarks on an ambitious endeavour to tame and train the kestrel, whom he affectionately names Kes. In the midst of this solitary endeavor, Billy finds an unexpected ally in his English teacher, Mr. Farthing, and his classmates, who encourage his pursuit. This newfound purpose brings a ray of light into his otherwise grim existence, offering a taste of solace and hope. However, the harsh reality of his life is never far behind, threatening to eclipse his moment of joy with impending tragedy.
