Plot

In a quiet suburb of New York, the seemingly tranquil life of the upper middle class family unravels as Arthur, a respected attorney in his early sixties, instigates a separation from Eve, his wife and a meticulous interior decorator. Arthur's decision to break away from his longstanding marriage is fueled by his belief that Eve's obsessive control over their home environment had led them to merely exist, rather than truly live. This seismic shift in their familial structure, unexpected for Eve, triggers her clinical depression and propels her into a nervous breakdown. Their three daughters, each distinct in their own right, bear the burden of this separation in various ways, their individual lives further complicated by the consequences of their parents' decision. Renata, the eldest, is a celebrated poet, her talent admired by her mother and largely financed by her father. Her success, however, casts a disheartening shadow over her husband Frederick, a novelist struggling for recognition in the literary world. Joey, caught in the throes of middle child syndrome, is a bright but aimless soul, constantly living under Renata's towering achievements. She drifts from one unfulfilling career to another, even as she becomes the reluctant caretaker of her mother's post-breakdown life. Despite feeling unwanted by her mother, Joey has always been special to Arthur, her approval being his validation. Her life with Michael, a political activist who often clashes with Eve, adds another layer to her complex existence. Flyn, the youngest, is a successful television actress in Hollywood, fully aware that her fame hinges on her beauty rather than her talent. Her glamorous life is a stark contrast to the turbulence brewing within her family. The family dynamics take a drastic turn when Arthur introduces Pearl, his new love interest, into their lives. Pearl's cheerful and liberated personality is a direct contrast to Eve's rigid and depressive demeanor, and Arthur's intention to marry her threatens to further fracture this already dysfunctional family. Interiors (1978) is a profound exploration of a family torn apart by divorce, their lives marked by stifling relationships, unfulfilled dreams, and the struggle to find joy amidst the chaos. This compelling drama brings to light the toxic effects of negativity and the yearning for love, acceptance, and tranquility in a world turned upside down.
