Plot

Set against the backdrop of the 1980s, "If There Be Thorns" is a tale of secrets and lies entwined in the heart of the Dollanganger family. Christopher Jr. and Cathy Dollanganger, the result of an unsettlingly close relationship between their parents, are now a surgeon and ballet teacher respectively. They have woven a new life under the Sheffield name, an adoptive mantle that conceals their dark past. Haunted by a mother, Corrine Foxworth, who once sought to eliminate them for her father's colossal inheritance, Chris and Cathy live in the shadow of their past. Despite her eventual mental collapse and institutionalization, Corrine's influence lingers, a phantom reminding them of the life they escaped. Cathy's children, Jory and Bart, exist in this world of obfuscation, unaware of their parents' incestuous beginnings, or of their own disparate lineages. Their household, a fragile edifice built on deception, teeters on the brink of collapse when Corrine, freshly released from the institution and fortified by her wealth, moves in next door. She yearns for reconciliation, seeking to weave herself back into the fabric of their lives. Corrine manipulates Bart, the more vulnerable of Cathy's sons, turning him into her unknowing pawn in this game of familial chess. As Bart spirals down a path of psychological turmoil, he learns about his parents' shared bloodline and his great grandfather Malcolm. His outbursts, often attributed to the long-deceased Malcolm, threaten to topple the Sheffield house of cards. An enigmatic bystander, devoted to the fire and brimstone teachings of Corrine's late mother, fans the flames of this impending disaster. "If There Be Thorns" is a chilling exploration of a family's struggle with their past, their secrets, and the threat of a legacy that could shatter their carefully constructed world. It is a story of love, deception, and the danger inherent in the skeletons lurking in the family closet.
