In the heart of 1859 Pennsylvania, the bustling small town life is interrupted by the arrival of Sally Waterson and her father, traveling medicine show performers whose journey abruptly halts when their wagon succumbs to an unexpected fire. Stranded and bereft, they find solace in Mrs. Cortlandt and her ambitious grandson, Peter, who has visions of a pipeline coursing its way across the state, delivering oil to every doorstep.
