Plot

In the twilight of his life, Saketh Ram, an 89-year-old South Indian Brahmin, finds himself on the precipice of mortality. As he prepares for the inevitable, his life's journey unfolds like an intricate tapestry, woven with threads of love, loss, hatred, and redemption. As a young man in the 1940s, Saketh, alongside his good friend, Amjad Ali Khan, unearthed the secrets of civilizations past as archaeologists in Karachi. Life was harmonious, and the political unrest brewing around them seemed like a distant thunder. Saketh's life was blissfully complete with his Bengali wife, Aparna, and their peaceful existence in Calcutta. However, the winds of change were unrelenting, and the formation of Pakistan triggered a storm of riots and chaos that swept Saketh off his feet, plunging him into a whirlwind of violence and despair. A chance rescue of an innocent girl from a Muslim gang set off a chain of events that shattered Saketh's world. His home was violated, and his beloved Aparna was brutally raped and murdered. The grotesque act burned an inferno of vengeance in Saketh’s heart, transforming him into a ruthless avenger, his soul clouded by the smoke of hatred and pain. Saketh fell into the clutches of Hindu extremists led by Abhyankar, who fueled his rage and channelled it towards a religious crusade. Grief-stricken and manipulated, Saketh found himself renouncing his family and his new wife, Mythili, to serve the cause - the assassination of Mahatma Gandhi. In the midst of this tumultuous journey, Saketh met his old friend Amjad, a staunch Gandhi admirer, who questioned his path and loyalty. His thirst for revenge led him to the heart of Delhi, where destiny awaited him on a public prayer ground. With his life’s mission at his fingertips, Saketh found himself in a crossfire, torn between loyalty, duty, and the moral weight of his actions. The echoes of his past encounters and the unforgiving reality of the present made him question the clarity of his intent. The climax unfurls in an unexpected twist, forcing Saketh to confront the consequences of his choices, reevaluate his beliefs, and understand the true value of unity and peace in a nation scarred by religious divide. The film concludes with Saketh's poignant plea for forgiveness to Gandhi, a moment that epitomizes the depth of his transformation. In the end, "Hey Ram" paints a vivid picture of an individual’s journey through the tumultuous landscape of India's partition, capturing the essence of human resilience amidst chaos, and the power of forgiveness over vengeance.
