Herbie Goes Bananas (1980)

In the sun-drenched city of Puerto Vallarta, Pete Stancheck's life veers off the ordinary path when he inherits an old Volkswagen Beetle, affectionately named Herbie, from his Uncle Jim Douglas. Accompanied by his friend Davy Johns, aka D.J., Pete is initially crestfallen by the car's humble appearance. Yet, when Herbie reveals his near-human personality and extraordinary capabilities, Pete and D.J. daringly decide to enter the unconventional vehicle into the prestigious Brazil Grand Primeo formula one race. Their journey to Rio de Janeiro, however, is far from smooth. Along the way, they cross paths with a street-smart urchin named Paco, who secretively stows away in Herbie's trunk. The beetle-faced car, with an unexpected knack for trouble, lands Pete, D.J., and Paco into a series of wild predicaments. In a desperate move to finance their wild ride, they ingeniously rope in wealthy Louise Trent and her scholarly niece, Melissa, an anthropology doctoral candidate. Pete finds himself playing the charming suitor to the shy Melissa, an act that stirs a whirlpool of guilt within him. Unbeknownst to the group, Paco, a skilled pickpocket, is pursued by a gang of criminals. He has unwittingly stolen a film that reveals the location of priceless Incan treasures, catalyzing a high-stakes chase across the continent. As they all scramble towards Rio, Herbie becomes their unlikely hero, shielding Paco, Pete, D.J., Louise, and Melissa from the merciless villains, while simultaneously thwarting the criminals' attempts to loot the hidden treasures. Amidst the whirlwind of adventure, sparks of romance flicker between Pete and Melissa, and Louise finds herself drawn to a cruise ship captain named Blythe, whose demeanor echoes more of a Bounty ship captain than a leisurely cruise leader. Will love blossom amidst the chaos or will their journey end in heartbreak and misfortune? Only time and Herbie's antics will tell.
