Plot

In the highbrow, coveted town of Orbiston Parva, the affluent Despard family reigns supreme. They own and run the Tranquilax factory, which is the town's primary source of employment, manufacturing a so-called restorative product. The revered Church of England's Archdeacon Aspinall, guardian of the Holy Trinity amongst other churches, suggests the appointment of Reverend John Smallwood to the vacant vicar position at Holy Trinity, convinced that Smallwood's pedigree makes him a perfect fit for the town's elite. An amusing bureaucratic blunder, however, results in the hiring of an entirely different Reverend John Edward Smallwood, a man whose persona diverges significantly from the reverend initially proposed, his naivety being one of his standout traits. Reverend Smallwood’s unusual and unorthodox actions, such as appointing Matthew Robinson, a black dustman, as the church's new warden and inviting the vast Smith family, welfare-dependent squatters on Tranquilax land, into his vicarage, shock the community. His actions unmask the unchristian attitudes permeating the seemingly devout town, including members of various Christian denominations. Reverend Smallwood's presence sparks a spiritual awakening in some, but his actions also ignite a chain reaction of chaos as many struggle to break free from their unchristian traditions. This unique tale of a man's sheer innocence unravelling a town's deep-seated hypocrisy is as dramatically compelling as it is slyly humorous.
