Heaven (2019)

In the rustic backwoods outside of the quaint town of Winnerow, West Virginia, resides high school prodigy, Heaven Leigh Casteel, the eldest of five siblings. She is the beacon of hope in the struggling Casteel family, led by her father, Luke, and Sarah, a woman she learns is not her biological mother. Instead, it is the wealthy Leigh Casteel, who abandoned her luxurious life to marry Luke, whom Heaven strikingly resembles. Leigh's untimely death during childbirth is an event Luke heartlessly attributes to Heaven, causing a chasm of resentment and shunning in their relationship. Despite the burden of being the family pariah, Heaven finds solace in her siblings - teenagers Tom and Fanny, and young adolescents Janey and Keith - who become her entire world in the midst of their father's chronic absence and neglect. Luke's frequent disappearances in search of work only result in scarce earnings, most of which fuel his alcohol obsession rather than providing for his family. As Heaven navigates the tumultuous waters of adolescence, a glimmer of joy enters her life in the form of Logan Stonewall, a newcomer to Winnerow and her classmate. Logan's burgeoning love for Heaven is marked by kindness and respect, shining a ray of hope on her otherwise gloomy existence. This ray, however, dims when unforeseen circumstances lead to the shattering of the Casteel family, with Luke scattering his children among different households. Heaven's journey takes her to live under the roof of Kitty, Luke's ex, and her unpublished writer husband Cal, supported financially by Kitty. As she battles the despair of her family's separation, Heaven uncovers more secrets lurking in the shadows of the Casteel lineage. Moreover, she discovers, unbeknownst to her, that she shares more with her biological mother than just physical resemblance as she teeters on the brink of womanhood. "Heaven" is a poignant tale of resilience, family secrets, and the unyielding bonds of sisterhood, painted against the backdrop of rural West Virginia.
