When her felonious father falls victim to a gangland showdown, young Dorothy Adams finds herself orphaned and thrust into a bleak world of an orphanage. Amidst the gloom, she finds solace in the companionship of fellow orphans, Bob Elliot and Mickey Roma. As she navigates the tumultuous waves of adulthood, Dorothy is cruelly duped into assuming responsibility for a hit-and-run accident by her affluent, yet alcoholic, fiancé, who subsequently deserts her.
Emerging from the steel bars of prison, Dorothy is not the same innocent girl. She morphs into a hardened criminal, resorting to armed robbery and gradually climbing the ladder of the local crime syndicate through a web of blackmail. However, her darkened heart still holds a soft spot for the orphanage, which she supports with a playground, funded by her ill-gotten wealth.
Her reign of crime comes crashing down when she is ensnared for racketeering, courtesy of the brave testimony of undercover cop, Jim Kelly. The final blow comes not from the gavel, but from a surprise corner. Her childhood confidant, Bob Elliot, promises to be there for her when the prison gates swing open once more, adding a spark of hope in Dorothy's bleak world.
