In the twilight of the 19th century, Korea is on the precipice of change as coffee makes its inaugural splash, setting the stage for a tale of deceit, manipulation, and political intrigue. The story revolves around the assassination plot against King Gojong, the 26th monarch of the Joseon Dynasty, orchestrated by a cunning Japanese officer named Sadako. At the heart of this dangerous gambit are Ilyich, a Russian sharpshooter, and Tanya, Joseon's pioneering barista, entwined not only in their professional lives but also in a passionate love affair.
