Caught in a whirlwind romance, American Patricia Carroll sails across the Atlantic to London, ready to embark on a new chapter of her life with her British fiancé, Alan Glentower. However, before she ties the knot, a stubborn desire compels her to pay a visit to the isolated country home of Mrs. Trefoile, the mother of her deceased ex-fiancé, Stephen. Patricia's lingering sense of duty towards this shadowy figure from her past is met with resistance from Alan, yet she remains undeterred.
