Plot

In the dim light of faith and redemption, Maud, a solitary young nurse, treads a path of devout Christianity, shaped by a shadowy past trauma. Now entrusted with the care of Amanda, a once vibrant dancer now reduced to a frail form by cancer, Maud is consumed by a zealous belief that she is Amanda's spiritual savior, sworn to rescue her soul from the abyss of damnation, at any cost. In her feature film debut, writer-director Rose Glass masterfully ropes the audience into this perturbed psyche, meticulously sketching a haunting portrait of a rural nurse whose life is set on an unsettling and ultimately shocking course. Morfydd Clark's portrayal of the virtuous Maud is marked by a rigid stoicism, concealing a disconcerting vulnerability. Maud's desperate search for redemption and companionship from her resentful patient (a captivating Jennifer Ehle) unravels in a dance of mutual understanding and conflict. Glass captures this complex relationship with a compassionate lens, initially painting a surreal, dreamlike ambiance that soon falls prey to Maud's rigid honesty, igniting an unbridgeable chasm that sends her spiraling into a claustrophobic whirlpool of self-doubt and paranoia. As Glass ratchets up the tension around her misguided martyr, subtle nods to predecessors of religious horror like William Friedkin's The Exorcist amplify the mounting dread. And when Maud's fevered delusion finally shatters, the ensuing fallout is both heart-wrenching and horrifying, a testament to the devastating power of misguided faith.
