In the shadow of menacing Nazi Germany, American Mark Preysing embarks on a desperate quest to locate his mother, Emmy Ritter. Renowned for her stagecraft and celebrated as a German national, Emmy is enshrouded in mystery, imprisoned in an undisclosed location for her perceived treason against the German state. Unbeknownst to Mark, her selfless act of offering sanctuary to German refugees on American soil, a humanitarian gesture she staunchly defends, has marked her for execution in the week to come.
In his relentless pursuit, Mark crosses paths with individuals who harbor knowledge about his mother's situation, yet remain silent, their fear of Nazi retribution muffling their voices. Among them are Fritz Keller, a long-lost friend from the United States; Dr. Berthold Ditten; and the intriguing Countess Ruby von Treck, an American-born widow with a German title, whose life remains untouched by the Nazi political whirlwind following her husband's death.
Despite her ostensible indifference, the Countess maintains a delicate friendship with General Kurt von Kolb, a man far-removed from the battlefield yet deeply entrenched in the party's secrets. As Mark navigates these perilous waters, he must persuade those with knowledge to assist him, carefully concealing his true intentions from the ever-watchful eyes of the Nazis. The clock is ticking, and every second brings his mother closer to a grim fate he is yet to discover.
