Enterrados (2019)

Nestled in the heart of the Principality of Asturias, in the municipality of San Martín del Rey Aurelio, Northern Spain, is the Pozo Sotón, a renowned mining well connecting the towns of Sotrondrio and El Entrego. Here, we find Daniel, an office technician of Argentinian descent, whose lineage is rooted in Asturian mine-workers. As the coal business teeters on the brink of extinction, Crespo and Sánchez, the mining company's CEOs, task Daniel with his first field assignment to explore a passage nearly a mile below the surface in search of a new coal vein. Daniel's expedition into the bowels of the earth, however, takes a disastrous turn when a firedamp explosion triggers a collapse, trapping him and four other miners: José, an elder on the cusp of retirement; Soto, a seasoned miner; María, an explosives technician; and Radek, a severely injured Russian miner. Meanwhile, above ground, Daniel's grandfather, Carlos, returns from Argentina to his native Asturias with a singular mission - to rescue his great-grandson. Parallelly, the Miner Saving Brigade, led by Luis, Fran, and Félix, embarks on a desperate race against time to save their trapped friends. As the trapped miners grapple with a dwindling supply of food, scarce water, and the oppressive darkness, Daniel's mind begins to unravel. Hallucinations dredge up memories of his past, including his ex-wife Marga and their son, also named Daniel. Guided by these phantoms of his past, Daniel engages in conversations with María, José, and Soto, in a desperate attempt to hold onto his sanity. As the days bleed into weeks, the dire circumstances push the trapped miners to the precipice of a gut-wrenching decision: to continue waiting for an increasingly unlikely rescue, or to dig a tunnel through the collapsed earth in a desperate bid for freedom. Amidst this bleak reality, Daniel and his companions face one final, harrowing choice: perish in the mine, or gamble their lives on a perilous last-ditch effort to survive.
