Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde (1913)

In the heart of London, the young and ambitious Dr. Jekyll is fervently experimenting, driven by a profound curiosity. He stumbles upon a chilling discovery - a potion that awakens his dormant, sinister alter ego. This other self he dubs Mr. Hyde, a grotesque, malevolent being of violent passions. As Hyde, he casts a terrifying shadow over the city that once adored Dr. Jekyll. The tale begins in the cozy parlor of Alice, Dr. Jekyll's betrothed. Disappointed by her fiancé's absence, Alice is unaware of the horrific transformation that Jekyll undergoes in the name of scientific curiosity. While Jekyll is busy tending to his charity patients, his professional colleagues, Dr. Lanyon and Lawyer Utterson, mock his fascination with unorthodox experiments. Unfazed, Jekyll continues his work, plunging into the eerie stillness of his laboratory at night to unleash his dreadful alter ego. Upon consuming the concoction, Jekyll morphs into the monstrous Hyde, who then introduces himself to Jekyll's household staff via a chilling note. Despite his fearsome appearance, Hyde is reluctantly accepted due to his association with Dr. Jekyll. Hyde's terrifying presence then pervades a local dancehall, leading to an appalling incident where he brutalizes a crippled boy, causing public uproar. In a bid to escape the consequences, Hyde seeks refuge in Jekyll's laboratory, narrowly avoiding exposure to Utterson. In a moment of clarity, Jekyll pledges to never again risk such a transformation. However, he soon realizes his evil alter ego is gaining control, even without the potion. Dr. Jekyll, attempting to control his fate, dictates a will stating all his possessions shall go to Mr. Hyde upon his death or disappearance. Alice, oblivious to Jekyll's torment, walks in on him just as the transformation begins. To her relief, Jekyll manages to reverse the process with an antidote. However, Hyde's malice knows no bounds. He resurfaces to commit a gruesome crime, strangling Alice's father and then escaping. Dr. Jekyll returns, courtesy of another dose of the antidote, but his precious fluid is rapidly depleting. The relentless police are closing in, and in a state of panic, Hyde drops dead, transforming back into Dr. Jekyll one final time. Alice, heartbroken, and the spectators are left to mourn the tragic end of a man who was, for all his faults, a martyr to medical science.
