In the heart of summer, Mrs. Crandell embarks on an adventure to Australia, entrusting her five children - Sue Ellen, Kenny, Zach, Melissa, and Walter - to the iron-fisted rule of the elderly yet tyrannical babysitter, Mrs. Sturak. However, when fate deals a cruel hand, and Mrs. Sturak unexpectedly succumbs to a fatal coronary, the children, in a blend of shock and childish glee, send her off to a local funeral home, anticipating a summer of unchecked freedom fueled by their mother's stash of vacation money. Their dreams are shattered when they discover that the wad of cash has been buried alongside the deceased babysitter, leaving them to creatively navigate the summer without Mom or her money. Seventeen-year-old Sue Ellen steps into the role of surrogate parent, initially attempting to work at a greasy fast-food restaurant. Unable to stomach the aroma of overused oil, she takes a daring gamble. Crafting a false resume and disguising herself as a seasoned professional, Sue Ellen lands a job as an executive assistant at a garment manufacturing company. Her employer, Rose Lindsey, the company's vice-president, is none the wiser and is thoroughly impressed by Sue Ellen's artificial credentials. Sue Ellen's double life teeters on the edge of exposure as she juggles dodging the office Casanova, Gus, maintaining secrecy from the spiteful receptionist, managing household needs with pilfered petty cash, and nurturing a budding romance with restaurant worker Bryan. Just when it seems she's got everything under control, the garment company faces imminent bankruptcy. Now, Sue Ellen must rally her teen fashion savvy and enlist the help of her siblings to not only save the company but also their carefree summer from the brink of disaster.
