Plot

In the wake of an unexpected loss, four adult Chinese-American siblings, Alexander, Liz, Victoria and Meimei, must confront their fractured past as they reunite in their native Seattle. Their mother, Linda Xiao, a woman they bitterly referred to as the "Dragon Lady", has succumbed to a cancer battle they were unaware of until after her death. Their mother's absence forces them to face not only their estranged relationships, tainted by a childhood marked by favoritism and indifference, but also their personal demons. Despite flourishing in their respective careers – Alexander, a cosmetic surgeon, Liz, a magazine columnist, Victoria, a successful real estate agent, and Meimei, a Chinese ninja movie actress - each sibling is encumbered by deep-seated personal struggles, many of which stem from their mother's harsh upbringing. Alexander, mirroring his late father's actions, is entangled in a secret affair, while his ex-beauty queen wife Cindy is painfully aware. Liz, still grieving the loss of her son Sam, is grappling with a broken marriage. Victoria is haunted by the forced termination of a relationship with her only love because of his race, a relationship that gave her son, Jason. Meanwhile, Meimei and her partner Dede are on a quest to start a family, seeking a suitable sperm donor. Their mother's last wish is to have her children unite and conduct a week-long traditional Chinese funeral for her, a daunting task for the siblings, who were raised with more western influences. With their cultural knowledge lacking, they must rely on their mother's long-serving Jewish housekeeper, Viola, to guide them through their mother's final rites. As the funeral week unfolds, revelations about their mother and family history emerge, including the mysterious presence of a man from Beijing, Chow Lin. Yet, the most profound family secret lies with Viola, who with a little spiritual assistance from the late Mrs. Xiao, unveils the truth that has the potential to either shatter or mend the Xiao family.
