Plot

In the grand ballrooms of Warsaw, the paths of Countess Marie Walewska and Napoleon Bonaparte intersect, kindling an intense fascination between them. Napoleon, entranced by Marie's youthful beauty and charm, attempts to lure her into his world, only to be met with resistance. Despite Napoleon's persistent advances, Marie remains loyal to her much older husband, disregarding the French leader's impassioned letters and gifts. However, as Poland's future hangs by a thread, a group of solemn leaders led by Senator Malachowski implore Marie to surrender to Napoleon's affections, viewing her sacrifice as the nation's salvation. Torn between honor and duty, Marie eventually succumbs, leaving her disgraced husband behind as he seeks annulment in Rome. For a fleeting moment, Marie and Napoleon find happiness in each other's arms, resulting in Marie carrying Napoleon's child. Meanwhile, Napoleon cuts ties with his childless Empress Josephine, paving the way for a political union with Archduchess Marie Louise of Austria, a marriage he believes will secure his future lineage with Hapsburg blood. Assuring Marie that their love will remain untouched, he remains oblivious to the fact that she is carrying his heir. Caught between love, duty, and the unborn child she carries, Marie Walewska makes the solitary decision to leave Napoleon, choosing to bear their child alone, leaving the French leader unaware of the legacy he has unknowingly fathered.
