In the midst of the turmoil following the Nazi annexation, the beguiling Johnny Jones (Hedy Lamarr) seeks refuge in America. As an Austrian escapee and alluring showgirl, her life takes an unexpected turn when her temporary passport expires, threatening her with deportation. Her only salvation lies in matrimony, a proposition complicated by the fact that her affluent publisher beau, Barton Kendrick (Ian Hunter), is already bound in marriage.
In an intriguing twist of fate, Johnny crosses paths with Bill Smith (James Stewart), an author struggling with his craft. She reveals her predicament and offers him a mutually beneficial proposal: a marriage of convenience that will allow her to stay in the country while providing him with financial stability. As he pens a novel based on their unconventional union, Bill finds himself increasingly drawn to his enigmatic wife, whom he only encounters once a week to receive a paycheck.
