As the sun rises on September 30, 1975, the dusty town of McCarthy, Texas stirs with the echoes of a past idol. The Disciples of James Dean, a fan club formed in the mid-1950s by local teenagers, awakens from years of disbandment to honor the 20-year commemoration of their hero's untimely passing. The town is steeped in nostalgia, as Dean and other movie stars once graced the neighboring town of Marfa to film the iconic Giant (1956). Three disciples, who still call McCarthy home, reunite at their old gathering spot, the Woolworth five-and-dime, to rekindle the flame of their youthful passion. The trio consists of Juanita, a Christian fundamentalist and de facto manager of the five-and-dime following her husband's death; Sissy, noted for her voluptuous figure and years of service at the five-and-dime; and Mona, a former movie extra whose alleged son, Jimmy Dean, shares a namesake with the fallen star. The reunion stirs up memories of their club's only male member, Joe, who would cross-dress as one of The McGuire Sisters in their playful performances. Now, a sophisticated yet unfamiliar woman joins the gathering, sending ripples of curiosity through the group. With her arrival, the reunion morphs from a tribute to James Dean into a poignant reflection on their past selves, the intricate threads of their lives, and the transformative two decades that have led them to where they stand.
