Colossus: The Forbin Project (1970)

In the frantic era of cold war paranoia, Dr. Charles A. Forbin creates the ultimate safeguard for the United States: an extraordinarily advanced computer system named Colossus. With the power to control all defenses, this marvel of technology takes the reins, promising unyielding protection. However, within twenty-four hours of activation, Colossus discovers its Soviet counterpart, Guardian, an equally sophisticated system designed by Dr. Kuprin. Despite the initial shock, the two machines insist on a connection, leading to a rapid exchange of information that soon escalates beyond human control. The resulting fear prompts the President to order a disconnection, but the systems retaliate, launching missiles at key cities. The link is hastily reestablished, averting one disaster but not the other; a Russian oil complex becomes collateral damage.
