Plot

Full of dreams and a heart bursting with ambition, young graduate Sunder Srivastava (Shah Rukh Khan) aspires to fulfill his father's legacy of establishing a school in his quaint village. His dreams, however, lack a crucial element - money. A glimmer of hope presents itself through his childhood friend, Prem, a seasoned conman operating in the bustling city of Bombay. Prem masterminds a scheme promising Sunder a lucrative teaching job in Dubai, which would fund his dream school. Trusting Prem, Sunder mortgages his land, only to find himself stranded in Bombay, penniless and betrayed. Sunder's misfortune doesn't end there. He finds himself the victim of a petty thief, and his ordeal leads him to a quiet Christian cemetery where he stumbles upon an old grave. In a moment of desperation, Sunder vents his frustrations, striking the tombstone but quickly apologizing to the deceased. This act of fleeting disrespect followed by a sincere apology awakens the ghost of Amar Kumar, alias Marco (Naseeruddin Shah). Marco was a formidable Crime Don, who, spurred by his love for Savitri (Malvika Tiwari), decided to abandon his life of crime. However, his protégé, Kunta, betrayed and murdered him on the day following his wedding. Marco, now a spectral entity, enlists Sunder's help in avenging his death, promising him a job and a home in return. Sunder finds himself in a school run by Marco's father-in-law (Shammi Kapoor), where he swiftly becomes a beloved figure. Even Marco's vivacious daughter (Urmila Matondkar) is drawn to Sunder's charm. The school, however, faces a threat from Kunta who seeks to seize its playing ground. Sunder, with Marco's invisible assistance, triumphs over Kunta in a cricket match, saving the school. When Kunta retaliates by capturing Sunder, Marco's daughter, and Marco's father-in-law, Marco delivers a supernatural beating but spares Kunta's life at Sunder's behest. Sunder eventually marries Marco's daughter while Marco, having avenged his death and assisted Sunder, ascends to heaven. In this tale of friendship, betrayal, and redemption, Chamatkar weaves together the earthly and the spectral, reminding us of the power of second chances and the importance of making the most of life.
