Cemara's Family (2019)

In the aftermath of a crushing financial blow, Abah's life takes a daunting turn when a debt collector seizes his house and all his cherished possessions. This calamity is courtesy of his brother-in-law's mounting debt, which rocks Abah's world and thrusts him into a relentless struggle to reclaim his life. He seeks temporary refuge in a remote village in West Java, in his ancestral home, a nostalgic haven inherited from his father. However, the universe strikes another blow when Abah loses his court case, a verdict that threatens to plunge his family into a life of perpetual poverty. Forced to adjust to his new economic status, Abah, along with his little family, must navigate this unfamiliar terrain. His family is composed of Emak, his dependable wife, Euis, their adolescent daughter on the cusp of her first period and first love, and Cemara, also known as Ara, their effervescent child whose spirit remains undiminished despite the hardship. As they grapple with their new reality, they are also confronted with internal familial tensions, which threaten to dismantle their cherished axiom: "the most valuable treasure is family." The narrative of Cemara's family thus unfolds as a poignant saga of resilience and love, of a family striving to remain intact in the face of adversity, testing the limits of their unity and their shared belief in the importance of family.
