Plot

In the heart of November 1958, the wholesome yet high-spirited Katey Miller, a shining star of her high school, is uprooted from her familiar surroundings to the vibrant yet tumultuous city of Havana. Her father, Bert, a prominent Ford executive, has been transferred, a move that unsettles Katey who yearns for her old life amidst the intellectual hum of her school. The new world that unfolds before her seems alien and intimidating; a glittering enclave of Ford executives' offspring, residing in the opulent Hotel Oceana, with a lifestyle that contrasts starkly with her own. Among the sea of unfamiliar faces, James Phelps, the son of Bert's boss, finds himself drawn to Katey. However, it is the raw, unfiltered street dancing by the passionate locals that truly kindles a spark in Katey’s heart, especially when she encounters Javier Súarez, a dancer and hotel waiter. A forbidden bond forms between them, nurtured by their shared love for dance and the pulse of Havana life, a bond that defies their vastly different social strata. Intrigued and inspired by the fervor of Cuban rhythm, Katey proposes an audacious idea - to compete in a prestigious Cuban dance competition at the luxurious Palace Hotel. Armed with her parents' formal ballroom training and Javier’s fiery street dancing, they embark on an exhilarating journey of dance, blending two worlds into one compelling performance. Yet, they must tread lightly, for the revelation of their relationship could ignite a scandal, threatening Bert's career and their own futures. Their journey is set against the intense backdrop of Castro's revolution against the Batista government, a struggle that echoes Javier's own. His father was a casualty of Batista's regime and his older brother Carlos now fights within the revolutionary forces. Amidst these swirling currents of dance, love, and revolution, Katey and Javier strive to find harmony, navigate their clandestine love and, above all, protect their shared dream. In Havana’s heated nights, they must dance not just to win, but to survive.
