Plot

Graduating from the hallowed halls of Yale, David, an intellectual with a passion for books and a staunch belief in atheism, finds himself at a crossroads. Craving to escape the clutches of his Connecticut roots and the conflict with his mother, he plots a course across the country, towards the verdant orchards of Oregon. His plans to journey with his girlfriend Jennifer go awry when she decides to tail him instead, following him into the unknown after he has already set off. Stepping off the bus in Oregon, David veils his identity under the alias, Samuel. Here, he enters a world that exists beyond the confines of textbooks and classrooms, where he must pick apples under the scorching sun among a motley crew of locals, and co-workers whose motives remain a mystery. Despite his overtures of distancing himself, he yearns for human connection, lamenting the missed opportunities for companionship. His decision to extend his stay in Oregon, influenced by Jennifer's unexpected arrival, pushes him into a whirlpool of unfamiliar circumstances. He encounters two figures that challenge his perception of life. Brian, or Curly, a forklift operator in the apple processing plant, and Jon, a war veteran turned stone mason, who while recovering from alcoholism, crafts jade clocks in the shape of Oregon for a craft fair. Jon's rebirth as a Christian brings him into direct conflict with David, an avowed atheist. As David navigates these encounters and experiences, his life unravels, revealing to him corners of the world and himself that he is emotionally unprepared for. His beliefs, sexuality, and faith are tested in this unfamiliar terrain, as he learns that life can't always be understood through the lens of academia, but rather through the complex, and often challenging, tapestry of human connection.
