Plot

In the vibrant landscapes of Kenya in 1958, the spirited Robin Cavendish (Andrew Garfield) finds his life dramatically altered when he is stricken by polio at the tender age of twenty-eight. Newly married to the fierce and devoted Diana (Claire Foy), Robin's world collapses as the disease leaves him paralyzed from the neck down, reliant on a respirator to breathe, and given a mere three months to live. Repatriated to Britain, Robin plunges into despair, distancing himself from Diana and their newborn son, Jonathan, and contemplating the bleak prospect of life tethered to a machine. But Diana, a beacon of determination, refuses to give in to the dire predictions. Her unyielding spirit begins to thaw Robin’s desolation, sparking a glimmer of hope in their shared existence. As Diana realizes the possibility of caring for Robin at home, she encounters resistance from the stern hospital administrator, Dr. Entwistle (Jonathan Hyde), who warns her of the fatal risks. But bolstered by the support of some empathetic medical staff and Diana's tenacious twin brothers (Tom Hollander), they dare to defy convention. With the innovative mind of inventor Teddy Hall (Hugh Bonneville), Robin and Diana embark on a courageous escape from the confines of the hospital. Embracing a new life at home, Robin meets his son and rediscovers the joy of being part of a family. Together, Robin and Diana forge an audacious path, filled with love, resilience, and a commitment to improve the lives of other polio patients. In this heartfelt journey, "Breathe" portrays the triumph of love and determination over life's harshest trials.
