Plot

In the heart-stirring narrative of "Boots and Saddles" (1937), young Edward, the Earl of Granby (Ronald Sinclair) and known affectionately as Spud, crosses the Atlantic to sell the ranch he inherited, managed by the steadfast Gene Autry (Gene Autry). Spud's arrival ignites a struggle within Autry, who understands the sentimental value of the ranch to its old hands and recognizes the latent potential of its cattle. Guided by his guardian, "Windy" Wyndham (John Ward), Spud remains resolute in his decision to sell, driven by his father's death and a lack of funds to maintain the ranch. On the verge of entrusting his heritage to the unprincipled rancher, Jim Neale (Bill Elliott), Spud uncovers Neale's selfish intentions of exploiting the ranch for breaking in wild horses and later selling them to the U.S. Army. Moved by this revelation, Autry steps up, persuading Spud to retain the ranch and adopt the same venture themselves, inciting Neale's wrath. Alongside Frog Millhouse (Smiley Burnette), the loyal ranch hands, and Spud, Autry embarks on a mission to secure an army-remount-service contract. Their resolve leads them to the army post where Autry crosses paths with Bernice Allen (Judith Allen), the daughter of the purchasing colonel. A warm camaraderie blossoms amidst the tension of the impending contract, further complicated when Colonel Allen (Guy Usher) declares a tie between Autry's and Neale's bids. The decision now rests on a high-stakes horse race, but as night falls, Neale plays dirty, setting Autry's stables ablaze. "Boots and Saddles" weaves a tale of loyalty and determination, as Autry and his companions navigate the treacherous path of rivalry, friendship, and a fight for their rightful place in the heart of the wild west.
