Beyond the Pale (2014)

In the heart of Victorian England, Edward Shore, a former Home Secretary, divulges a chilling secret to Whicher, a seasoned detective: Shore's son, Charles, recently returned from India with his family, is being stalked by an enigmatic Indian man named Asim. A trail of clues leads Whicher to discover that Asim was not alone in his journey from the East, accompanied by his younger sibling, Roshan, and was often seen in hushed conversations with Miss Khan, a governess. Miss Khan confides in Whicher, expressing her deep-rooted fears for Roshan's safety. When Asim's lifeless body is discovered in the grimy depths of the docks, a wave of relief washes over Charles, who vehemently denies any involvement in the murder. Yet, Roshan, fuelled by accusations against Charles, finds himself at the centre of a violent clash that leaves him wounded. Whicher entrusts Roshan's care to his landlady, Mrs Piper, a skilled nurse. However, the plot thickens when Charles Shore's children mysteriously vanish. Haunted by the echoes of a personal tragedy - the loss of his own son years ago - Whicher is driven to solve the tangled mystery. He must navigate the murky waters of deceit, aware that Charles is concealing crucial information, information that could lead him to the lost children and crack the case wide open.
