Plot

As the clock strikes midday on the cusp of a British summer Bank Holiday weekend, a symphony of bustling activity erupts. London's denizens, swept up in the anticipation of a seaside escape, surge towards the trains destined for the coastal retreat of Bexborough. Among the city's refugees is Catherine Lawrence, a dedicated nurse, who plans a clandestine weekend getaway with her naive beau, Geoffrey. He longs to impress Catherine with worldly sophistication, but their journey is postponed when Catherine is ensnared by a heart-wrenching case at work - the tragic demise of Ann Howard during childbirth. The plight of Ann's bereaved husband, Stephen, and their motherless newborn haunt her thoughts, casting a shadow over Geoffrey's attempts to kindle a romantic atmosphere in Bexborough. In contrast, Arthur and May, along with their trio of rambunctious children, embark on a simpler quest for sun, sand, and the occasional pub visit. Their holiday is a whirlwind of youthful energy and parental chaos, with Arthur seeking his own adventures when granted a moment's respite from their boisterous brood. Simultaneously, the radiant Doreen Richards, under the moniker Miss Fulham, and her companion Milly, are also Bexborough-bound. The pair, yearning to emanate cosmopolitan flair, have their sights set on the coveted Miss England beauty pageant. As Doreen grapples with the remnants of a recent breakup and the rising popularity of Miss Mayfair, she and Milly find themselves navigating a labyrinth of pageantry politics. Meanwhile, Stephen, shrouded in grief and longing for an escape from the painful echoes of his past, also finds himself drawn towards Bexborough. Enveloped in the thrum of holiday excitement, these disparate lives intertwine, weaving a tapestry of romance, sorrow, and camaraderie against the backdrop of the vibrant seaside resort. As the entertainers of the local "Follies" pray for rain, the narratives of these characters unfold, painting a rich portrait of humanity in this 1930s Bank Holiday weekend.
