Harry Lambert, a reserved and gentle soul of thirty-five, finds himself donned in the uniform of an Australian soldier, pushed into the chaos of war by societal pressure. In a secluded farmhouse, Harry finds sanctuary and more with Colombe Jacotot, a French woman in her forties. Deserted by her husband and mourning the loss of her son, she has been thrust into the grim reality of war, laboring in an ammunition factory. She shares Harry's disillusionment with the war, and it is through her stoic resilience that Harry discovers the true essence of courage. Likewise, Colombe finds a newfound sense of beauty in Harry's gentle strength. Their shared experiences in the face of adversity kindle a profound love.
