Plot

In the gritty underbelly of the city, Vasu (Ajith), a rough-and-tumble rogue, makes a living through petty fights and spends his nights sleeping in a cinema theater owned by Vinu Chakravarty. His life takes a drastic turn when he crosses paths with Mohana (Shalini), a music student and the daughter of the Police Commissioner, over a lost film reel. This chance encounter sparks an escalating chain of events, drawing Vasu into the crosshairs of an ex-mafia Don, Tulsi Das (Raghuvaran). Tulsi, harboring an old grudge against the Police Commissioner, manipulates Vasu into kidnapping Mohana, intending to tarnish the family's honor. But things go awry when Mohana, charmed by Vasu's singing, falls in love with her captor. Vasu, initially dismissive of her feelings, is persuaded by Tulsi to feign love for Mohana, a ruse that unexpectedly blossoms into genuine affection. As the plot thickens, Tulsi discovers that his hatred for the Police Commissioner is based on a misunderstanding. He desperately tries to convince Vasu to distance himself from Mohana, but it is too late—Vasu's heart is irrevocably entwined with Mohana's. Unaware of Vasu's true feelings, Mohana is confronted by Tulsi, who reveals the twisted plot. But Vasu's authentic love wins her over, setting the stage for a climactic showdown. In the end, Vasu finds himself leading local goons against the police, a pawn in Tulsi's vengeful game. The film culminates in a thrilling finale, with Vasu triumphing over adversity, protecting Mohana, and leaving the chaos behind. "Amarkalam" is a dramatic tale of love and deception, street honor and personal redemption, set against the backdrop of a city that never sleeps.
