Plot

In the twilight of the 17th century, a profound tragedy befalls the renowned viola da gamba player, Monsieur de Sainte Colombe. Returning home to the devastating news of his wife's death, he retreats from society and transforms a tiny house in his garden into a sanctuary dedicated to his two beloved daughters, Madeleine and Toinette, and his unwavering devotion to music. While the world beyond his garden wall carries on, rumors of Sainte Colombe's extraordinary musical talent ripple outwards, eventually reaching the opulent court of Louis XIV. The Sun King, enchanted by tales of Sainte Colombe's artistry, extends an invitation to join his court's illustrious orchestra. However, the grieving musician, staunch in his solitude, resolutely turns down the king's offer. The whispers of Sainte Colombe's music, however, inspire Marin Marais, a young and ambitious man, to seek out the reclusive maestro. Driven by a burning desire to master the viola da gamba, Marais implores Sainte Colombe for instruction. The movie then unfolds into a poignant tale of a stern, somber man, a master of his craft, and his relationship with Marin Marais, who goes on to become a prestigious musician under the watchful gaze of Louis XIV. "All the Mornings of the World" is a compelling exploration of grief, solitude, and the transformative power of music, set amidst the historical grandeur of the French court. It not only captures the essence of human resilience but also the enduring legacy of a man who sought solace in the harmonious chords of his viola da gamba.
