The Place Promised in Our Early Days (2004)

In a parallel postwar universe of 1996, Japan is fractured, its territories cloaked under separate rules. Hokkaido lies under the dominion of the "Union," while Honshu and the southern islands bend to the will of the United States. A towering structure pierces the sky of Hokkaido, its formidable silhouette visible even from the distant Tokyo. This tower, shrouded in mystery, becomes the summer obsession of three middle-school students. They pledge to breach the border in a plane of their own making, determined to unlock the enigma of the tower. However, their ambitious endeavor is abruptly halted when Sayuri Sawatari, one of their trio, falls mysteriously ill and is whisked away to Tokyo. Years later, the world teeters on the brink of another war. Hiroki Fujisawa, haunted by the memory of their unfulfilled promise, discovers Sayuri has been slumbering in a coma ever since that fateful summer. Desperate to awaken her, he enlists the help of his old friend, Takuya Shirakawa. As they set out on their quest, they find themselves not only battling the constraints of time and impending doom but also grappling with the gnawing ghosts of their past.
