Plot

In the bustling heart of 1929 Brooklyn, resides Moss Hart, a 25-year-old dreamer and aspiring dramatist, still living in his parents' rundown apartment. Despite the mediocrity of his five unproduced plays written over four years, there exist inklings of genius, particularly visible in his comedic scenes. Inspired by advice from his confidantes, Moss ventures into unfamiliar territory, opting to pen a comedy, diverging from his penchant for serious drama. This new endeavor is deemed Broadway-worthy by his circle, who employ their connections to garner the attention of the industry's creme de la creme for production consideration. High-powered producers are captivated by Moss's comedy, leading to promising introductions. Initially, Moss's ambition yearns for the grandeur of Warren Stone's endorsement, but fate has a different path laid out. Circumstances lead him to the doorstep of Sam Harris, a less prominent, yet capable manager, who agrees to produce Moss's play on the condition it receives a final touch from a renowned comedy playwright, George S. Kaufman. Thus begins Moss's quest to win over Kaufman, setting the stage for a collaboration that could potentially birth a masterpiece, or become another forgotten script gathering dust. As Moss navigates this precarious path, he discovers that even with Broadway powerhouses in his corner, success is not guaranteed. The looming question persists: will Kaufman's fame eclipse Moss's budding talent, or will this be the beginning of one of the most celebrated partnerships in American theatre? This vibrant backstage story, inspired by Moss Hart's best-selling autobiography, gracefully unravels the trials and triumphs of a struggling playwright in the glamorous yet ruthless world of Broadway.
