Being highly gifted in and a love and passion for figure skating that started at a very early age, Tonya Harding stood out among others in her sport. Although her skating gift was apparent and she was the first American woman to complete a triple axel in 1991, Harding had several disadvantages she had to deal with in her life. Harding grew up in an impoverished home with an abusive mother who worked as a waitress. She did not fit the image that was expected in the skating world and as a young adult, Harding suffered the abuse of her first husband, who interfered in her skating career.
