Plot

In the vibrant heart of 1958 London, amidst the infectious rhythm of rock and roll, a new era of teenage expression is blossoming, shattering the confines of war-torn years. Our protagonist, nineteen-year-old Colin, is a passionate advocate for equality, navigating this colourful world while grappling with his own place in life. Drawn to the idea of wealth but repulsed by the machinations required to acquire it, Colin finds himself torn between his principles and his love for the aspiring fashion designer Crepe Suzette. As Suzette's star begins to rise in the fashion world, her relationship with Colin becomes entangled in her ambitious ascent, her focus shifting from their love to her career. To impress Suzette, Colin abandons his principles and delves into the world of photography, working for a pop promoter in an attempt to break into the big time. However, in his quest to win Suzette's heart, he unwittingly becomes the public face of London's teenage spirit, straying further from his ideals. As Colin's identity becomes increasingly entwined with his work, racial tension simmers ominously in his Notting Hill housing estate, threatening the fabric of his vibrant community. Colin, now far removed from his true self, must grapple with reclaiming his lost ideals and rekindling his love with Suzette amidst a city on the brink of turmoil. This musical adaptation of Colin MacInnes' novel captures the pulse of late 1950s London, a city caught between innovation and tradition, love and ambition, harmony and discord.
