Plot

Set against the backdrop of tumultuous May 1980, we follow Man-seob (Song Kang-ho), a humble taxi driver from Seoul, struggling with unpaid rent and the loneliness of his widowed existence. His mundane life takes a radical turn when an irresistible opportunity presents itself - the prospect of earning the unimaginable sum of 100,000 won. All he has to do is drive an enigmatic German reporter, Peter (Thomas Kretschmann), from Seoul to Gwangju and back before the iron hand of curfew falls. Thrust into a journey filled with uncertainty, they traverse the highway, their path barred by police roadblocks guarding Gwangju's perimeters. Man-seob, fueled by desperation and the image of his young daughter alone at home, manages to weave their way into the city. In Gwangju, they find themselves in the eye of a storm, amidst students and citizens rising in a large-scale demonstration against their own government. The air is thick with danger and unrest, pushing Man-seob to beg Peter to retreat to Seoul. However, Peter, aided by a local taxi driver Hwang (Yoo Hai-jin) and a university student Jae-sik (Ryu Jun-yeol), remains undeterred, his news camera capturing the escalating chaos. As the hours pass, the situation spirals, the city's turmoil reflecting in Man-seob's growing regret over his decision. He's no longer just a taxi driver, but an unwilling participant in a violent uprising, his thoughts constantly straying to his daughter waiting in their quiet home in Seoul. "A Taxi Driver" is a gripping tale of ordinary lives caught in the crossfire of extraordinary circumstances, a vivid snapshot of a nation fighting for its voice.
