Across the Universe (2007)

Surrounded by music from the Beatles songbook, this fictional love story takes place in the 1960s with the background of the Vietnam War, the Civil Rights movement, drugs, rock and roll and social protests. With more than 30 songs by the Beatles woven into the plot the love story between a working-class Liverpudlian artist and an upper-class American girl unfolds. The film takes place in an Ivy League school, the Manhattan Lower East Side and the gritty dockyards of Liverpool and includes the Detroit riots. It uses a combination of live-action and animation along with the music that defined the decade.
